The Jersey Fresh Growers'
Quality Assurance Program Statement
New Jersey growers who participated in the program are committed to meeting the highest wholesale and consumer expectations for the way we grow, harvest, store, pack, and deliver perishable fresh produce.
Meeting your expectations means more than meeting USDA Grade Standards. It means earning your trust in our Homegrown Jersey Growers' quality pack and trust in the communication you get from the grower.
Merchandising support and responsiveness to receivers are supported by our Jersey Fresh Growers' Quality Assurance Statement. This enables these selected Homegrown Jersey Fresh products from identified growers start the chain of custody and arrive at their destinations in optimum condition in terms of ripeness, cleanliness, handling, temperature management, and packaging.
Jersey Fresh Growers' Quality Assurance Statement
Ripeness. A ripeness harvest index will be used where appropriate and harvesting for every crop is timed in a way that assures the produce has satisfying tenderness, aroma, taste and flavor- ripe but not over-ripe.
For example, a ripeness test (e.g., pressure) for peaches will be used to assure fruit are picked at the optimum moment of ripeness; cantaloupes will be harvested close to full slip; tomatoes can be harvested at stages 4-5, instead of 1-3.
Harvest Containers and Practices. Correct harvest containers will be selected to minimize bruising, abrasion and other defects. For example, plastic bins will be used instead of wood containers on tender crops.
Pack Cleanliness and Uniformity. Produce will be harvested at times and in ways that assure it is kept as clean as possible; free from sand, soil and trash. For instance, green beans will not have pin beans or trash; arugula, lettuce and asparagus will be free from sand.
Temperature Management. Harvesting will be done in early morning at the coolest time of day whenever possible. Crops like sweet corn will be pre-cooled quickly to remove field heat within one hour to recommended temperatures extending freshness and usability. Produce will be kept cooled at Rutgers Cooperative Extension recommended temperatures while they are stored.
Ship date. Produce leaves the farm the same day, or as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours) unless inappropriate (e.g., peaches).
Identification. New Jersey Growers' names will always be on the containers.
